FROM KIRKUS REVIEW
(Starred Review) A outcast incited pledge sleuth investigates a murder in Coyote's entrance novel. Murphy is a untimely dipsomaniac vital on a streets of Venice, CA. When his loving Rottweiler, Betty, needs an costly surgery, a former football actor takes on a purpose of gumshoe to solve a internal murder. He'll need to solve a box within a week to explain a financial prerogative and save his best friend. Coyote's novel, a pretension suggestive of books from authors such as Raymond Chandler and Mickey Spillane, is a play on film noir. While operative opposite genre conventions has turn a normal for some writers, Coyote ventures into new domain by unassumingly renovating a normal qualities of film noir. Most detectives are slipped a mickey during some point, since Murphy is roughly eternally drunk, and concussions from his football days means him to blackout. The decrepit underworld is one with upscale restaurants and a happy bar and a femme fatale is a yoga instructor. The murder, however, is incidental, and a novel is in tip form during scenes highlighting Murphy's organisation of homeless friends, many of whom are away featured, and with a reasonably named Mama Bear, a maternal figure and thrift-shop owners who literally puts a garments on Murphy's back. Regular visits to Betty during a vet's bureau are a heart of a story, so Murphy's inducement stays noble. The book might not interest to all readers, as sex and assault are graphically depicted, yet never insensitively. An unshakable noir with a protagonist training along a way, though over a some-more sincere genre traits is a rewarding story of a man's umbrella adore for his true companion. --Kirkus ReviewCustomer Reviews

A Solid Debut Novel!
By bobbewig
I motionless to examination The Long Drunk over all a others in my mountain-high smoke-stack of books for dual reasons: (1) since a author sent me an eBook duplicate for free, and (2) since we wanted to get my initial knowledge with reading a book electronically. we contingency admit, however, that we was a bit doubtful about how good this book would be since it was ONLY published as an eBook (not in paper).
My disposition was fast put to rest, as we schooled that The Long Drunk is a rarely engaging book from an author that demonstrates a lot of potential. It is a book that will have we during times on a corner of your seat, shouting during loud, enslaved during a denunciation and a function of some of a characters, and with your eyes welling adult with emotion. In further to a being a fast-paced read, Coyote's categorical and support characters are expected to be unequivocally opposite from others we have met before in a book. Further, a odds of we wanting to accommodate characters like this in genuine life I'd theory is VERY slight. As a matter of fact, I'm peaceful to gamble that we tend to "cross a street" when we confront people like them in bland life. However, after reading Coyote's The Long Drunk, we competence have a somewhat opposite opinion, or during slightest a improved understanding, of real-life characters like those you'll accommodate in this book. As for me, I'm already looking brazen to "bumming" around with Coyote's expel of characters whenever his second book comes out.
Now, let me tell we a small of what The Long Drunk is about so that we can decider for yourself if we wish to "wet your whistle" with a categorical character, Murphy, and his cohorts. The Long Drunk is about an ex-NFL football player, now a homeless alcoholic, who decides to try to assistance solve a cold-case murder so that he can get a prerogative income in sequence to save his best friend's (the Rottweiler, Betty's) life. The book takes place in Venice, CA -- nonetheless not expected a tools of Venice in that we might have experienced. In The Long Drunk many of your time spent with these down-and-out characters will be in a alleys, gutters and bars of Venice. If you're like me, we consider you'll find that while Murphy's try to solve a murder in this noir-like poser is engaging (albeit far-fetched), a many fun, sparkling and romantic aspects to be subsequent will come from a scenes that concentration on Murphy and his friends vital life on a street. Further, Murphy's communication with, and feelings about, his dear dog, Betty, will not be simply forgotten.
If we are in a mood for a gritty, funny, moving, hard-boiled poser with a unequivocally opposite expel of characters, I'd advise we give The Long Drunk a read.

Gritty, Fast Paced Novel
By Mary E. Young
Let me prologue this examination by saying that this isn't unequivocally my favorite genre. The book tells a story of Murphy, homeless alcoholic who decides to solve a murder in sequence to obtain prerogative income to save his dog. The book is full of humorous and comfortless moments. It juxtaposes a resources and payoff of Venice, California with a misery and struggles of a homeless. It is unequivocally gritty, full of alcohol, sex and violence.
Overall, we suspicion a book was intensely good written. The author unequivocally knows how to tell a story. Even nonetheless a genre isn't unequivocally for me, we suspicion a author did a good pursuit of gripping a story relocating and creation a characters engaging and dynamic.

Lit Noir
By John F. Lehman
This is a dirty story of a homeless alcoholic who contingency solve a murder in sequence save his dog's life. If that turns we off...wait.
When we initial started out as a striking illustrator we suspicion limit contrariety meant black and white. Gradually we detected that gray creates black seem blacker and white whiter.
So it is with Eric Coyote's The Long Drunk. His depiction of a homeless and a abundant gives noir a new, sharper, some-more unfortunate clarity. And a romantic force behind Ulysses S. Grant Murphy's wanting income for costly medical diagnosis to save his pet longhorn strike by an SUV will keep we reading prolonged into a night. But a author does an equally excellent job, either it is a stage in a behind alley, a happy bar, yoga category or a universe of art.
I'll be honest. we felt like we was reading a Raymond Chandler (Murphy's possess guide) or Dashiel Hamett that no one had nonetheless seen. The Long Drunk is a masterpiece you'll remember twenty years from now with a grin on your lips and rip in your eye.
One of my many unpublished dog poems.
